Assistance with seeking out that next satisfying read
Gnooks - Discover new Books uses an AI engine called Gnod, referring to the search engine as Gnod's World of Literature. It asks you for three of your favorite authors. I tried it out, giving it Stephen King, Barbara Kingsolver, and Toni Morrison. Based upon these, Gnod suggested Maya Angelou. I was then prompted to like, dislike, or be unsure about this suggestion. Liking it, I received Langston Hughes, W. E. B. Dubois, Ralph Ellison, and Cynthia Bond. Cynthia Bond is new to me.
I then entered all horror authors: King, Poe, and Shirley Jackson. My results were Mariana Enriquez, M. R. James, Vernon Lee, Robert Erwin Howard, and Walter de la Mere. All of these are new to me except M. R. James, whom I have read on this podcast.
Finally, I entered King and his sons, Owen King and Joe Hill. Results were Scott Smith, Paul Tremblay, Stephen Graham Jones, M. R. Carey, and Robert R. McCamon. I haven't read anything by Jones or McCamon yet.
Whichbook | A new way of choosing what book to read next lets you search for a suggested read by mood and emotion, the location of the book's setting, or character and plot. You can also drill down starting from a bestseller.
The best way to search for horror suggestions here seems to be by choosing the character and plot option, then using the plot option, and choosing "lots of twists and turns". Doing so, I received Black River Orchard by Chuck Wendig, Fresh Dirt From the Grave by Giovanna Rivero, One of Our Kind by Nicola Yoon, and Strange Pictures by Uketsu. Strange Pictures is in my Bookshop.org ebook app queue, waiting for me.
The character and plot option allows you to ask for suggestions for books with characters by race and sexuality. For example, I was able to drill down and find a novel with both indigenous and pansexual characters: Split Tooth, by Tanya Tangaq: Winner of the 2018 Alcuin Society Award for Excellence in Book Design--Prose Fiction; Audiobook finalist for the 2019 Audie Awards--Literary Fiction and Classics; Shortlisted for the 2019 Amazon First Novel Award; Shortlisted for the 2019 Kobo Emerging Writer Prize. Added to my TBR pile immediately.
Bonus: the world map has an "imaginary" location option.
So I have found new authors to me. I hope these sites help you as well. Since I am learning Welsh (thanks to my DNA discoveries and my never-ending curiousity), I am going to check out the Wales section. I am also going to use the character and plot search to find diverse books and authors for my new Little Free Library, charter number 214751, since I, as its steward, have signed the Read In Color pledge, and we have both a large Latinx and indigenous population in this area. This will be quite helpful, hopefully. I am beyond excited about this project!
